Can your Computer Run VisualBASIC5 Programs - Easily?

It depends on your Windows version (95 vs 98) and your Browser (Internet Explorer vs Netscape).

  • VisualBASIC5 (VB5) is fully supported by Windows 98, but not by 95 (unless it has been upgraded). To see if your current Windows istallation can run VB5 projects, try the samples below. If they don't work, you may discover why not - and find a "fix".
  • VB5 programs are supported by Internet Explorer (IE) but not by Netscape. For example, the buttons on this page are VB5 programs. If you're using Netscape you won't see them. That's mostly because IE, VB5, and Windows itself are all MicroSoft products and are highly compatible with each other.
  • If you're running Netscape and came here to try IE, click here to begin.
Internet Explorer (IE)
  • With a "Typical" Windows 98 installation, or an upgraded Windows 95 installation, you should see 3 buttons in the frame below. (It may take a while). If you don't see any buttons, go here for advice about an upgrade from microsoft.com - and come back (Bookmark this page now - you may have to re-start your computer).
  • The buttons are ActiveX controls. When you click one, it will (try to) run a small VB5 program. Go ahead.....
  • The pictures below are Linked to similar VB5 programs. When you click one, a box will pop up. Choose "Run this program from its current location" (not "Save this programto disk"). And click "OK" or "Yes" to sebsequent messages.

  • If you get Error Messages and/or Security Warnings with either of these methods, or if you're just curious, go here for some explanations and advice about settings and upgrades.

Test 1 - Will Freely

Test 2 - Dino Shore

Test 3 - One Hand Clapping
Netscape
  • You won't see any buttons next to the pictures in the above frame.
  • When you click a picture, a box will pop up and prompt you to Save the program somewhere. If you've never done this before, click here.
  • To run a program from Netscape, you first have to save it somewhere, then find it, and then run it. (Unless I'm missing something).
  • If you get Error Messages when you try to run a program, go here for some explanations and possible upgrades.
